Captain Geoff Lamond from New Zealand Game Fishing sent this months report.

A little over a month ago now I was really looking forward to writing our March edition of the New Zealand Game Fishing Newsletter. We had some pretty big expectations for what lay ahead with some exciting trips planned. As a whole March hasn’t worked out as well as hoped solely due to the unseasonal and persistently strong winds from the Easterly quarter.

By all accounts the fishing itself has been pretty good as long as we were able to get a fair crack at it, but with several 35 knot Easterly forecasts (and sometimes 50 knots!!) getting to the targeted Three Kings Islands has been a little tricky to say the least. Adding to the frustration, any little weather window has usually coincided with our changeover day.

Striped_Marlin_March_2012

During the early stages of March, to negate the strong Easterlies we headed down the West coast for two trips with reasonable reward. The marlin fishing was a little hit and miss with multiple bites some days followed by pretty quiet days the next, while still fishing exactly the same areas and conditions. Justin Stokes managed his first billfish on one of the trips pitch baiting a small Stripe on spinning reel in choppy conditions.

Jigging for Kings on the Ahipara Banks was generally more than productive with numerous mid range kings to keep everyone occupied late in the day. We even managed to switch a 30kg model for Justin Stokes trolling marlin teasers out off the top end of the bank one morning; once again on spinning gear it ended up being quite a tough 15 minute battle.

As always a visit to the West Coast means a Snapper session the fabled Cape Maria Van Dieman on the way home. During the past month we had a couple of short 2 hour sessions while the current and wind were favourable with reasonable results. No real monster fish to speak of but plenty mid range good eating size for guests to take home.

It wasn’t until late March that we finally managed to get through to the Kings with the second of our NZ Fishing News “Marlin University” trips... finally a weather window coincided with the middle stages of a trip rather than changeover time!

Bigeye_March_2012

During two a bit days on both the Middlesex and King Banks we managed several stripes and the highlight of past month a 132.8kg Bigeye Tuna for well known NZ Fishing News editor Grant Dixon. None of us on board knew what we were dealing with during the tough 2 hour 45 minute fight, so it was a nice surprise when the big fat tuna popped up next to the boat. In everyone’s surprise, I managed to clip its shoulder with the wheels. Certainly not a big wound by any means but enough for us to deem the capture disqualified. Still a hell of a capture on 50lb stand up and with it being switched of the teasers making it even a little more special... Great job Grant and who said switching tuna can’t be done?

During the trip, we managed a few firsts with Richard Taylor and Garry Bowden both nailing their first billfish with Richard landing two. Christchurch guest Peter Van Eekelen also caught two stripes with one being a first for him on spinning gear.

Jigging for Kings on the Middlesex Bank is currently as good as ever with several released fish up to and over the 30kg mark.

During the last morning we were on the King Bank, in extremely rough conditions we managed two stripes from three bites in just over an hour’s fishing. We certainly would have loved to have stayed and made the most of the exceptional fishing, but with the rough seas and a rather large Bigeye Tuna that needed to be weighed and processed we sadly left it all behind. So with high hopes of getting back up the Kings on the following trip, yet again a 40-50 knot Easterly forecast put pay to any well laid plans.

We generally didn’t get any further than Spirits and Tom Bowling Bay at the top end of New Zealand on our last trip and even spent an afternoon at anchor playing cards watching torrential horizontal rain blast past the cabin window... nice stuff!

All in all, the guys from Taranaki were in pretty high spirits during the trip and managed some nice catches despite the weather. Amongst other bits a pieces Manu Hay-Vega, Justin Ormsby and Jason Perrett all managed snapper over 15lb while Justin managed a fish well over the 20lb mark during the last day of the trip. To the guys credit all the bigger fish were released to fight another day.  Not particularly what we want to be doing at this time of year but you take what you can get with the weather being the way it is.

As mentioned, the fishing at the Three Kings is probably as good as it has been over the past couple of seasons and as long as the weather allows we’re hoping for some productive trips over the coming month or so. I’ll be taking a short break after the next trip and handing over Arenui’s reins to the more than capable Chris Ash and my two excellent crewmen Shaun Thomsen and James Brown. We’re expecting the birth of our second child so look forward bringing you updates of good fishing and healthy babies.

Thank you to Captain Geoff Lamond from New Zealand Game Fishing

This report was sent by Stuart from Grenada Fishing.

Well, here we are again. The season so far has been erratic with the fishing and variable with the weather and we are still out there. Someone has to do it in blue waters, blue skies and temperatures in the 90's.

There are some nice fish pictures as usual and a surprise one at the end. The fish include a good BLUE MARLIN, a huge DORADO and just now a very big Wahoo. Let them keep coming.

Billy, a Chicago fireman, gave us a full-volume commentary as he fought his sailfish and would no doubt be heard the same when at his work. A very positive fellow who virtually called that fish in to the baits.

One of our many regulars, in fact he claims to be very regular, Jerry The Lobster man (he cooks them beautifully) posed with a big red buoy we fished out of the ocean. We planned to present it to him as the ocean equivalent of the wooden spoon but then he went and caught a 250lb BLUE MARLIN. Well done him.

That surprise picture? You don't often see your captain in front of the camera, no comments please, but here he is on one of the Grenada Billfish Tournament early-morning starts looking like he's driving the boat under auto-pilot. I'd like to deny that of course.

On that subject, give a few thoughts to our next Billfish Tournament which will fish mid-January 2013. Your booking on the boat will be most welcome.

ARENUICaptain Geoff Lamond on board Arenui from New Zealand Game Fishing sent me this report to share.

By all accounts February has been a pretty good month within New Zealand game fishing circles with several mind blowing captures around the country. The fishing has not been the only thing of steady improvement during February, the weather also was more than acceptable with long periods of variable winds, which were a stark improvement from the blustery conditions we encountered during January.

We’ve had ‘Arenui’ located in Whangaroa Marina since early Feb and we’ve focused just about all our energies fishing the Three Kings Islands with some good results overall. Probably our highlight of the past month has been releasing an estimated 800lb Blue Marlin for American angler Neil Peterson on just 50lb stand-up tackle. The fish would have well and truly given the New Zealand record a good nudge, but to Neil’s credit he had decided quite early in the fight that he preferred to let it go to fight another day. With the fish doing head high jumps on the leader after 4 hours there certainly wasn’t an issue regarding its health upon letting her go... all good fun and a great fish.

The NZ ‘Nationals’ were a little mixed for us, we certainly had more than our fair share of shots during the weeklong tournament but generally failed to capitalize.  We jumped off more than I can remember including a mid range Black Marlin that added salt to the wound and we had more Stripes do figure “8’s” around our live baits and buggar off than ever before. A little frustrating to say the least but I guess everyone has those weeks from time to time.

It seemed that the King Bank and Ahipara/Hokianga were the places to be with vessels ‘Headquarters’, ‘Moet’, ‘Saltshaker’ and ‘Reel Passion’ amongst the high scoring teams. The lads on Saltshaker had a day to remember nailing a rare Grand Slam in NZ waters, catching a Sword, Stripe and Black marlin in a 24-hour period. Not to finish there, they also landed a nice size Yellow fin late in the day to finish off.

Without doubt the two most notable captures during the past month were the two ‘lifetime’ fish from private boat ‘Western Break’. Just prior to the National’s the guys landed a 334kg Northern Pacific Bluefin Tuna while fishing on the shallow patch near Cape Karikari. Apparently the guy’s were live baiting skipjacks in an attempt to catch a Black Marlin and had the behemoth tuna climb on. Not stopping there, a couple of days later they were trolling lures on the west coast and nailed a 358kg Black Marlin... go figure! An unbelievably awesome effort all round. I think if that were me I’d sell the boat and all the tackle, buy myself a good recliner sit at home and just give myself high-fives for a year or two.

During our last trip we had husband and wife team, Tim and Leanne Tasman-Jones on board for their annual fly and light tackle fishing excursion. Tim managed to hook a 500lb Blue Marlin on 10kg fly tippet for a short while, while Leanne caught an 81.4kg Stripe on 8kg conventional tackle. Certainly not a huge fish by any means, but being a 10:1 capture and a Tutukaka club ladies record it was a more than notable capture. Leanne’s fish was actually tail wrapped and proved to be one of the harder fish we’ve ever caught on lighter tackle and was finally subdued after a tough 2 hour battle... great effort Leanne and look forward to upping the stakes next year!

As mentioned the King Bank has proven to be the most consistent spot for us so far, with further patches of fish showing up of Wekaroa, Cape Karikari and North Cape on a less consistent basis. We have some busy times ahead with back-to-back bookings through the remainder March and through to mid April, so we certainly look forward to bringing you good news in our next report.

Since our last report we’ve had a cancellation in mid/late April that we’d dearly love to fill, the dates coincide with the new moon in April so should fish really well. If anyone’s interested please don’t hesitate to drop us a line and bear in mind that we have the ability to place individuals if need be.

Good luck out there...until next time!

The following report was sent through by Geoff from New Zealand Game Fishing.

The 2012 game fishing season has taken a little bit of persuasion to kick into gear with a more sedate beginning than we’re probably use to. There has certainly been some good fishing to be had off the usual ‘early season ports’ of Whitianga and Tutukaka, but these good days have been offset by a mix of bad weather, complete changes in current and the presence of the commercial seining fleet.

We witnessed the effects of seiners first hand fishing behind the Poor Knights Islands just last week. Fishing was pretty good with big schools of Saury, Skipjacks and I even spotted a handful Yellow Fin Tuna busting the surface from Arenui’s tower. Many boats saw action from billfish throughout the day including a hand full of doubles amongst the fleet, unfortunately the recreational fleet weren’t the only ones making the most of the good conditions as we all had to weave our way around a couple of seiners operating with the aid of spotter planes. The following day the landscape had changed substantially... No bait, no birds, no dolphins despite current, water clarity and temperature breaks all remaining the same. We still managed a Striped Marlin that day for first time angler Mike Saunders but it really was needle in a haystack stuff.  With reports of seiners currently operating from Cape Brett to Mayor Island it certainly reopens concerns on where exactly our open ocean fishery is heading.

We only need to view this well documented clip http://www.greenpeace.org.nz/tunavideo to get an appreciation on the extent of damage that’s occurring.

378Kg_Black_Marlin_NZAnyway that’s enough of a whinge and back onto more positive things. Without doubt the highlight so far of the New Zealand game fishing season has been the 375kg Black Marlin caught at Mayor Is in early January from the boat Jan’s Decision. In rough conditions the guys managed a fish of a lifetime in New Zealand waters and surely an experience that they’ll never forget. Blue Marlin have been generally few and far between with only a handful caught so far along New Zealand’s east coast. The most notable Blue Marlin capture so far has been the 260kg disqualified capture by a father and son team during the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club Junior Tournament. Being only early February I’m more than sure we have some good fishing ahead of us for these great fish.

As usual we’ve based ourselves in Tutukaka for the early season bite, we’ve generally managed between 1-3 bites a day with switching still our technique of choice. With the added mix of jigging on North Reef and the odd Shortbill Spearfish, we’ve found more than enough to keep us occupied. From early February, Arenui will be relocated to Whangaroa Marina and we’ll be situated there through to June during our busy charter schedule.

Arenui is probably in as good nick as it’s ever been since we’ve owned her, so we’re certainly looking forward to having everyone on board and getting stuck in as the season progresses. James Brown and Shaun Thomsen are back on board with us this season so I’m sure all returning guests will be happy about that to. Contact Geoff here to plan your next trip on board Arenui.

Steve Torres took the Ana Maria offshore for a overnight charter from Jan-31 to Feb-1, what a trip as soon as they hit the fishing grounds and put the kites out 2 big tuna's jumped out of the water. 5 minutes later Freddy hooked a 200 pound + Yellow Fin Tuna on a 20 reel Mark Started reeling her in and after a couple laps around the boat Freddy Gaffed the cow and pulled her aboard the Ana Maria. While Mark was fighting the big Tuna the boat had drifted close to the island so Captain Steve decided to troll back to where we had started and on the way a nice Striped Marlin hit a Lure, Mark Reeled the Striped Marlin in fast and Jaun pulled her up for a quick photo and released her.

After the Marlin they started drifting again for Tuna and Captain Steve Hooked one more Tuna that was about 80 to 100 pounds and that was it for day 1. At night they stayed up and caught a whole bunch of squid to use for bait, the next day the crew nailed another 4  more Tuna all about 70 to 100 pound range and released a small Mako Shark very rare catch in PV. Great 2 day's of fishing total count 6 Yellow Fin tuna's 1 Striped Marlin and 1 small Mako Shark. Thank you to Steve Torres from Ana Maria Sport Fishing Charters for the report to share with all our followers.

1_marlin_winner-Ana_MariaSportfishingDay 1

The boats set out at 7am. Captain Steve had caught 4 marlin the previous week and had marked a couple of hot spots around the rock. The crew caught some bigger live baits and starting trolling just after 10 am. They had their first hook up and Steve hit the throttle. The fight was on and Mark reeled in the 335 pound Blue Marlin in an hour and a half . The rest of the day was pretty cold after that but they had their trophy fish.
Day 2

There was a big rain storm that lasted all night and continued into the early morning for the ride out at 9am. After that it was clear skies and at 10am, same time as the day before, they had their first hook up, a big Sailfish. As this isn't a Sailfish tournament the crew released the Sail and starting trolling again but had no more bites. They starting heading back to the marina at about 4pm and had heard of 2 other marlin caught for the day, so they were running back with fingers crossed and ended up on top by about 20 lbs.

Madeira
Angler Jim released a 60 pound White marlin on Friday on the 'PESCA GROSSA'. The Blue Marlin still haven't showed up in any numbers as the water is still quite cold. The warm water is creaping up from the Canaries in the south and from the Azores in the North west.

Bermuda
Bermuda Big Game Classic, REEL ESTATE
entered Barrs Bay to weigh their boated blue marlin.  Since no fish were boated on the fist day, a qualifier over 500-pounds could mean a double daily jackpot.  Fortunately for the team she weighed in at 517-pounds giving them a chance for a nice payday if no other team could catch a larger one. CLICK THROUGH wins with 3 Blue Marlin and 2 White Marlin releases.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
The Tuna bite is still red hot inside and outside of the bay. Captain Steve Torres has never seen so many tuna inside Banderas bay. Despite a little rain in the morning it has been an incredible 1st week of July. Inside the bay expect 15-30 lb tuna, outside range has been 40 - 150 lbs. The Blue and Black Marlin  season is starting with Steve catching a nice Blue last week around 300+, and other reports of Blacks at  el banco. Puerto Vallarta will be holding the Marlin and tuna tournament on July 14th at the La Cruz Marina. With how the fishing has been lately it is definetly going to be a tournament to remember.

m_african_billfish_foundation_logoWelcome to the African Billfish Foundation Newsletter in which we share the highlights of the 2010/2011 season and the past months. We have had a busy season with challenges and accomplishments which have enabled the foundation to continue evolving and sharpen its effectiveness.

It is gratifying to report that 2723 fish were tagged and 31 recaptures were reported which included an exciting recovery of a black marlin off Madagascar.  The ABF has also continued to make great strides in the sharing of information through reports that   will be presented at international meetings in both the Seychelles and Berlin.  We have also extended our tagging programme to the Middle East and Zanzibar.

Kenya2Members Report: 'BIG Game Fishing, Kenya'
A special thanks to Howard, Sue and Crew for the report.

2009 and 2010 set the mood for fishing in 2011. We all had such a good season of marlin and sailfish catches, resulting in every one re booking pretty much in the same period as for 2011, but with some new faces in the mix.

This just goes to show how difficult it is to predict this wonderful sport of ours. We moved Kipapa up to Watamu in mid January looking forward to better fishing north and arrived to find the Watamu fleet of boats catching a few stripeys and blacks with sail fish in the mix. It’s odd to see 20 boats all creeping along with live baits out. We soon found we were doing the same, fortunately the bait was pretty well spread out and we didn’t have to fish too close to the rest of the boats.

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Fishing Report Courtesy of Picante Sportfishing www.picantesportfishing.com

It is day four and the preliminary results are in. It has been a hard fought tournament. The weather today was picture perfect. And the fishing was good too. Just about the same number of fish were caught today as the last couple of days. And there were some different names in the top teams. The “27th Treasure Cay Annual Billfish Tournament” team from Florida had a great fishing and catching day and ended up in first for the day. They released 6 Striped Marlin and racked up half their total points. And that rocketed Eddie Flack into second place angler behind Hernando Gonzalez from the “IGFA Offshore World Champions 2010” team. That also put the Florida team into a tentative tie for fourth place.

The South African team, “S.A.D.S.A.A. Billfish Classic 2010” had a great day with 5 Striped Marlin. That also was half their score and that put them into 2nd for the day and tentative 6th place overall. The third place team for the day was the “Ocean City Light Tackle Club 63rd Annual Derby” team, with 1000 points also. They had a slow start with only one Striped Marlin on day one, but did a fine job releasing 5 Striped Marlin today, but still didn’t score high in the overalls. So far these results are for the day and the official winners will be announced at tomorrow night’s dinner.

The fishing has been good just like we all expect Cabo fishing to be. With 59 teams consisting of 282 anglers and 289 billfish caught the tournament has turned what started as a slow spring into more what we like to see. Anglers from over 30 countries using different techniques and fishing with a lack of good bait have made the 2011 IGFA World Offshore Championship a success. Congratulations to all the anglers and good luck in this year’s tournaments.

Team 62 weighed a 226 pound yellowfin tuna today caught by Flavio Campos Reis representing the Torneo De Marlin Azul from Brazil. It took 3 hours and 19 minutes to boat the fish which put them in first place in the tuna category.
