The Sunshine Coast as its name suggests boasts sunshine basically all year round. Located in south east Queensland 1 hour north of the Queensland's capital "Brisbane". From "Caloundra in the south to "Noosa" in the north, it is regarded as one of the best holiday destinations within Australia. The coastline is scattered with some of the most magnificent beaches anywhere in the world and offers heaps of accommodation options and fantastic bars and restaurants.Only 30 mins away is "The Hinterland" which offers many B&B's, award winning restaurants, relaxed shopping, art galleries, and incredible scenery.
Not only is it one of the best holiday locations, it has arguably some of the best offshore fishing in the country. With a large fleet of boats calling "Mooloolaba" harbour home, you will have no trouble finding a memorable fishing experience.
Dominant game species include, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Sailfish, and the occasional "Striped Marlin" and "Spearfish". You will also find other species like "Mahi Mahi", "Wahoo", "Spanish Mackeral" and "Yellowfin Tuna". If you like a good feed of reef fish than you are also in luck with some great reef found as close at 4-5 Miles from the harbour. Common species include Snapper, Pearl Perch, Red emperor, Parrot, and many others.
The Sunshine Coast has two game fishing clubs, "Sunshine Coast" and "Mooloolaba" which between them offer 4 tournaments throughout the year. The "SCGFC" has consistently been awarded Australia's no 1 tag and release club due to their large and experienced fleet coupled with a great fishery so close to the harbour.
The hottest bite is late September through April with light tackle sailfish up to 70kg in October and black marlin up to 120kg in November through April, with February through March seeing the biggest numbers.
January through April is the heavy tackle season with large Blue Marlin being caught up to 800lb.
Although these are generally the best periods game and other pelagic species can be found all year round. The best reef fishing is through winter although you will catch a feed any time of the year.
