Nestled on the coast of Far North Queensland, the city is tucked between the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea and the lush rolling downs of the Atherton Tableland to the west. The city centre focuses on the Cairns Esplanade at the seafront with the relatively small CBD bounded by Cairns Central Shopping and the Cairns Railway Station to the west. Popular with Backpackers, Cairns offers a unique experience for everyone no matter what sort of holiday you are looking for.

The majority of Cairns tourist attractions and services are based around the Reef Fleet Terminal on Pierpoint Rd, jutting out into the ocean with wharves, a marina and shopping centre at "The Pier" and are all built on reclaimed land. Probably the most noted attractions are the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest to the north. From December to March, the monsoon trough is close to Cairns and brings with it hot, humid conditions and possible thunderstorms and tropical cyclones. The tropical cyclone season is normally from December to April but exceptions do occur.

Cairns is home to world's best giant Black Marlin. These giants attract some of the best skippers and deckies from all over the world who call Cairns home between August and December. The hunt for a 1000lb plus Black marlin "Grander" is what brings people back year after year. Many will achieve this in their first season but those who miss out will be back next year to try again. It is truly a magical experience watching a "Grander" charging in behind the boat. It is claimed that more Black Marlin are caught around Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef every year than the rest world combined. Cairns is simply a must for any serious big game angler.

Although Cairns is well known for its giant Black Marlin, it is considered one of the premier fishing locations within Australia and the world on many fronts. Inside the reef from August through September, light tackle Sailfish and Black Marlin are very common and outside the reef on the "Sea Mounts" you will find Blue Marlin. Apart from pelagic species, you name it, it's most likely there for you to catch. This area is one of the most diverse marine areas anywhere in the world.

If your looking to join a club in the Cairns area you have 3 to choose from, "Cairns Game Fishing Club", Yorkeys Knob Sport Fishing Club, and "Cairns Bluewater Game Fishing Club".
